Air Jordan 6 design heritage
Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the original Air Jordan 6 debuted in 1991 as the sixth signature basketball shoe in Nike's Jordan series. Michael Jordan wore the model during the Chicago Bulls' first NBA championship run that year, marking the beginning of the team's championship dynasty.
The original silhouette drew inspiration from Jordan's favorite Porsche sports cars, with streamlined lines and a sense of speed. Its defining design elements included:
- Tongue openings: Two round openings designed to help with putting the shoes on and taking them off, inspired by a sports car steering wheel.
- Rear pull tab: A rubber heel tab inspired by a sports car's rear wing, designed to assist entry. The original series background also described its role in Achilles tendon protection.
- Air cushioning: Visible Nike Air at the heel and embedded Air cushioning in the forefoot.
- Rubber outsole: A combination of semi-transparent and solid rubber, balancing traction and visual appeal.
